Colorado hunting base towns

Northwest — Craig and Meeker

This is Colorado's best-known elk country, covering the Flat Tops and the units in the low double digits and 200s around the Yampa and White River drainages. Both towns are small, hunting-economy towns: expect gas, groceries, lodging, and hunting-supply stores geared toward the season, plus registered outfitters based locally. Southwest — Gunnison, Durango, and Pagosa Springs

The southwest spans the Gunnison Basin and the San Juan Mountains — bigger, higher-elevation country than the northwest, with more limited/draw units mixed in among the OTC ones. Central — Salida and Buena Vista

The upper Arkansas valley towns serve the central mountain units along the Front Range's western side. This corridor is closer to Denver and Colorado Springs than the western-slope towns, which makes it a shorter drive for Front Range residents, though the trade-off is generally more hunting pressure given the proximity. It's also the region where the outfitter directory currently has the fewest verified listings — worth checking the outfitter directory directly before assuming local guide availability.

What to expect from a base town

Most of these towns are small — built around ranching, outdoor recreation, and hunting season itself — not resort towns. Expect straightforward lodging (motels, cabins, some short-term rentals that book up early in-season), basic groceries and gas, and at least one wild-game processor in or near most of the towns above, though hours and pricing vary and you should call ahead during peak season rather than assume walk-in service. Booking lodging

Base-town lodging fills up fast for the OTC rifle seasons especially — book weeks or months ahead if you want anything other than a tent. If you're hunting with an outfitter or a drop camp, lodging and sometimes processing arrangements are often handled as part of the package; guided hunt costs covers what's typically included.
